Prestwich Village
coming to life

Momentum builds on Prestwich regeneration
as next phase moves forward

Working in partnership with Bury Council, we’ve launched a new community conversation as work continues towards a planning application for the next phase of the £100m+ regeneration project.

Your Prestwich is an ambitious project that will transform the Longfield Centre into a new village centre, including a larger library, and create a thriving destination for shopping, dining, and community events, whilst strengthening Prestwich’s position as one of the best places to live in the North West.

The first phase of the regeneration, the £14m travel hub, is due to complete in summer 2026, and will provide over 300 parking spaces, including electric vehicle charging points and accessible bays, alongside extensive cycle storage.

We have recently secured £6.8 million funding from the Greater Manchester Good Growth Fund, which has enabled the next phase of the regeneration to move forward.

The plans in detail

Since the outline plans were approved in July 2024, we’ve been refining the masterplan to make the most of the site. Now, we’re planning to submit detailed plans for the next phase which includes new homes, revitalised retail spaces and welcoming community areas.

The updated masterplan now includes:

Homes for everyone

Up to 250 homes, including a mix of affordable homes, as well as homes for first-time buyers, growing families and downsizers. The number of homes has increased by merging two of the buildings, while keeping them the same height and retaining pedestrian links.

Thriving local market

A market hall, providing smaller, flexible spaces for local and independent retailers to thrive and grow, helping to support Prestwich’s diverse business community.

Lively village square

A larger village square, designed as a lively destination for events, markets and festivals, with family-friendly social places for the whole community to meet and relax. The arrangement of the buildings has also been reworked to allow more sunlight into the village square, creating an inviting public space.

More retail opportunities

New retail spaces, complementing the high street and catering for Prestwich’s diverse business community.

New community hub

The community hub will feature a larger library with flexible community spaces and independent leisure and retail businesses located on the ground floor.

Connected and accessible

Maintaining and improving a strong connection to public transport offers, such as the tram stop and local bus links, and through to the wider village and creating a welcoming arrival into the village.

Green spaces for all

Plenty of green spaces, trees and places to wander, relax and sit across the village centre.

Healthy living

A gym to support healthy lifestyles.

Hugh Taylor, Senior Project Manager, said:

“We’ve made great progress with the travel hub, which is due to open in the summer, and securing £6.8 million from the Greater Manchester Good Growth Fund means we can move forward with the next phase of regeneration and deliver the village centre that Prestwich deserves.

“We’ve been refining the masterplan to make the most of the site, delivering more new homes, bigger and better public spaces and plenty of greenery, trees and places to wander, relax and sit. We now want to hear from the people who know Prestwich, and what they think of our updated plans.”

Cllr Eamonn O’Brien, leader of Bury Council, said:

“This £100m investment is laying the foundations for a vibrant, modern town centre with new opportunities, and a brighter future for the whole community. We know the journey can be challenging, and we’re extremely grateful for everyone’s continued patience as the work continues. Your support is vital and makes a real difference.

“When the work is complete, Prestwich will have a town centre the whole community can be proud of.”
